Treasure, The

Two men team up to go in search of buried treasure on a country farm in this wry comedy from internationally acclaimed director Corneliu Porumboiu.

When Costi’s neighbor asks to borrow $800, Costi turns him down, saying he can’t afford it. When the neighbor reveals the money is needed in order to discover the hidden riches his dying grandfather insinuated was buried at the family’s country home, Costi, swept up in dreams of an unexpected windfall, agrees to finance the half-baked expedition. Their get-rich-quick scheme proves more difficult than imagined, as both men quickly find themselves waist deep in a hole and relying on the world’s most overly sensitive metal detector operator. Adored by critics and cineastes, the Romanian New Wave is not always recognized for having an obvious sense of humor (although there’s usually an extremely acerbic one in play). The Treasure, however, offers a welcome array of simple pleasures and outright laughs as it tracks the gently absurd efforts of its amateur treasure hunters. Carrying a dark undercurrent of serious political intrigue, Porumboiu’s complexly toned film has a gentle and richly rewarding approach, making The Treasure a true delight.
