Maud Watts (An Education’s Carrey Mulligan) rallies for the vote in this powerful film exploring the struggles and strength of a group of women involved with England’s female suffrage movement.
With the aide of physician Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter) and co-worker Violet Miller (Anne-Marie Duff), Maud becomes consumed by the movement’s outcry for justice and equality. Her participation in rallies leads to her involvement with the Woman’s Social and Political Union. Led by the charismatic Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), the union inspired women to use violence as a means of protest due to past peaceful demonstrations not being answered with change. Maud finds that her blossoming riotous nature may not be accepted by those closest to her, including her husband (Ben Whishaw). Suffragette shares the untold story of the impact a small group of woman had on a country’s social regime and eventually the world.
