A gripping biography following a crusading journalist who ultimately exposes one of the largest sport scandals of the modern era, The Program charts the rise and fall of disgraced cycling champion Lance Armstrong.

Returning to the Festival after screening Philomena in 2013, Director Stephen Frears’ new film focuses on Lance Armstrong (played by PFF Rising Star Recipient Ben Foster) as he begins his pursuit for his first Tour de France in 1993. Giving his first interview to the Sunday Times, Irish sports journalist David Walsh (Chris O'Dowd) dismisses Armstrong as a potential serious challenger on the Tour because he thinks Armstrong lacks the physique for the grueling mountain climbs of the Tour. Finishing far behind the leader, Armstrong acknowledges this as well, and so begins his journey down the duplicitous path of doping and deceit. While Armstrong’s career would soar to unprecedented heights of success — winning the Tour de France a record seven times — these victories were shockingly undermined when it was finally revealed that Armstrong had spent his career cheating the system through a sophisticated blood doping program and web of lies.
