My Sex Life... or How I Got Into An Argument

In this breakout film from contemporary French auteur Arnaud Desplechin (Kings & Queen, A Christmas Tale), Mathieu Amalric plays a man overwhelmed by the mess he has gotten himself into; a burgeoning academic career and three different girlfriends.

Paul Dedalus (Amalric) is not a womanizer…he just loves women. In My Sex Life…Or How I Got Into an Argument director Arnaud Desplechin takes this questionable cliché and finds the complex, universal story within, the very human search for that moving target: happiness. Paul is at a crossroads where he can continue on the path he has been working towards for nearly a decade, with his career in academia and his long term girlfriend (Devos), but he feels an existential twinge of rebellion. He considers leaving his life behind, possibly with one of the other two women he has been seeing. This film introduces and still exemplifies many of the traits audiences and critics alike have come to love in his films; stories that at once pay homage to yet playfully subvert classic French New Wave, the balance of sincere emotion and a sly sense of humor, his ability to capture the sublime drama that lives within the quotidien. See it in a double feature with its contemporary counterpart, My Golden Days, which fleshes out stories from Paul’s past.
