My Golden Days

The masterful Mathieu Amalric reprises his role from My Sex Life… or How I Got Into an Argument in Arnaud Desplechin’s lovely, longing look at childhood and first love.

As Paul (Amalric) readies himself to leave a life of exotic travel behind in order to return to his native France, he begins to reminisce about his younger days. First he thinks of the mentally unstable mother who prompted him to move into his unconventional great aunt’s house. Then he relates a moment of naive rebellion during a high school field trip to Russia in which he gave his passport to a boy looking for a way out, creating a false identity twin for the rest of his life. Finally, he recounts the most significant experience of his life, a tender but precarious nine-year love affair with a girl named Esther, a school friend of his younger sister. While not a sequel or prequel to Desplechin’s previous work, My Golden Days tells a touching story that stands alone, but that enrichens the viewer’s understanding of the original film. In moments both dramatic (Esther’s intense depression over the distance between her and Paul) and deceptively ordinary (the easy closeness of siblings driving around smoking weed and listening to cassette tapes) Desplechin weaves a portrait of youth, a thing which is shimmering, feral, poignant, painful, joyous, exuberant, and above all, fleeting. For the ultimate experience, PFF24 will also include a single retrospective of My Sex Life… or How I Got Into an Argument.
