Hallow, The

A dark and ancient thing lurks in the woods near Adam and Clare’s new home in rural Ireland and it’s coming for their baby boy.

Even in its early domestic scenes, something ominous pervades The Hallow. A tree surgeon, Adam (Game of Thrones’ Joseph Mawle) studies diseased trees and the mysterious black goop that’s oozing out of them in the nearby wood. Clare sets to work on making their new house a home, taking down iron bars from the windows while dodging fearful threats from their disturbed neighbor. Both of them laugh off local folklore about creatures in the forest, but they both soon learn that these rumored “baby-takers” are the stuff of living nightmares. Director Corin Hardy’s first film is modern-day creature feature, smart in how it teases out its real stars and completely relentless once they take stage. From the big scares reminiscent of Sam Raimi at his most exuberant, to the gruesome, David Cronenberg-stye body horror, The Hallow is a horror movie that delivers the goods and takes your firstborn in return.
