avatar for Guilty

Based on a real-life double murder in India, this tension-filled thriller stars one of the country’s greatest actors, Irrfan Khan, as the police inspector determined to solve the case.

When fourteen-year-old Aarushi Talwar is found murdered in her bedroom, the police immediately suspect the family’s live-in servant, until his body is discovered the following day. Spurned on by a ravenous media hungry for scandal, the officers turn their attention to the parents, reimagining the crime of passion as an honor killing, despite a troubling lack of evidence. As the case grows more and more convoluted, truth becomes indistinguishable from rumor, and eventually, a special investigator, played with unflappable cool by Kahn, is called in to try and make sense of everything—a near impossible feat. A remarkable work of cinematic plotting, with its Rashomon-like structure of fractured storylines and multiple points of view, Guilty gleefully subverts the classic structure of whodunits while never failing to be an engrossing murder mystery. Throughout it all, director Meghna Gulzar delivers a scathing critique of India’s unwieldy justice system, where bureaucracy, corruption and plain old incompetence conspire to forever obscure the truth about India’s most notorious, supposedly solved murder.
