Great Alone, The

An emotional story of redemption, perseverance and will, The Great Alone captures the inspiring journey of Lance Mackey, four-time winner of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and one of the best sled dog racers of all time.

Lance Mackey seemed destined from birth to be a sled dog racer. His father, Dick Mackey, co-founded Alaska’s famed Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1978. Lance’s father was also a champion of the 1,200-mile trek when Lance was only seven years old. Determined to equal those accomplishments, Lance intended to enter the 2001 Iditarod, only to be sidelined by throat cancer, forcing him to abandon his lifelong quest. After surgery and radiation, Lance willed himself to resume his sled dog training, building up towards his inspiring comeback challenging for the Iditarod championship. He won his first Iditarod in 2007, and garnered subsequent wins in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Shot in 2013 on location, The Great Alone follows Lance, now the four-time Iditarod winner, during his try for victory number five, giving viewers a first-hand experience of the brutal race that has played such a significant part of Lance’s life.
