Demon

A wedding in a small Polish village is turned upside down by spirits from the past — in more than one sense — in this stylish, cerebral update on Jewish dybbuk myth (where a spirit who’s suffered before death attaches itself to a living person to depart from purgatory).

Although Zaneta and Piotr haven’t known each other for very long, they are so in love that he is willing to move to her small Polish village from London so they can be together. Zaneta’s village throws her a beautiful wedding on her ancestral land, which her family wishes to give the happy couple as a gift. Although Piotr is welcomed with open arms, there is clearly some darkness and trauma bubbling beneath the town’s congenial surface. This negative vibe takes a terrifyingly concrete turn after Piotr finds a pile of hastily buried bones on the property in a makeshift grave, and begins to descend into more and more bizarre behavior while the wedding, hilariously, continues. Demon is thoughtful, layered psychological horror, full of unexpected black humor and steeped in delicately crafted atmosphere.
