Chasuke's Journey

An otherworldly emissary struggles to save a young woman — and possibly the entire world — from the whims of Heaven in this Japanese comedy of fate and consequences.

A mainstay of Japan’s independent film scene and multi-time PFF alum, Sabu has been directing wildly imaginative films since the mid-1990s. Known for their humor, breathless pacing, and elaborate, intricate plotting, his films often revolve around a protagonist, slightly out of his element, valiantly trying to keep up as the world rushes along, with or without him. Here, Sabu introduces us to Chasuke, an unassuming waiter in Heaven, who serves cups of tea to the angelic scribes who are writing on infinite scrolls the life stories on every man, woman, and child on Earth. When an offhand remark by Chasuke leads to a young woman’s untimely death, he finds himself sent to Earth to try to do the impossible and rewrite destiny. As Chasuke’s actions set off a karmic daisy chain of unexpected consequences, Sabu seizes the opportunity to build a madcap roster of characters, from angels and assassins to TV show hosts and, of course, yakuza, the members of the organized crime syndicate. A meta-reflection on filmmaking folded into a fast and funny fantasy, Chasuke’s Journey gleefully pulls at the loose threads in Sabu’s rich tapestry of life.
