45 Years

In the much anticipated follow-up to his indie darling Weekend, Andrew Haigh tracks the gentle undoing of man and wife as they contend with ghosts from the past, mere days before their forty-fifth wedding anniversary.

Geoff (Tom Courtenay) and Kate (Charlotte Rampling) have the kind of marriage that everyone hopes for; dynamic but comfortable, and although childless, full of love and happy memories. The week before they are to celebrate their forty-fifth wedding anniversary, Geoff receives a letter informing him that the body of his first love, who died during a hiking accident when she and Geoff were traveling around Europe together, has been discovered. At first the couple takes the surprise in stride, but over the next few days, the news wears at them. Kate begins to feel suspicion and envy over a dead woman, Geoff starts to take his life for granted as he disappears into the past. Both feel more and more haunted by the life that might have been, and start to lose faith in the life that almost wasn't. Winner of both major acting awards at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, 45 Years is a stunning slow burn of a film, one whose emotional ramifications takes hours, days, weeks to fully appreciate.
